Italy legend and Benevento head coach Fabio Cannavaro has commented on the state of calcio following the nation’s inability to qualify for the most recent World Cup. Cannavaro, who registered 136 caps for the Azzurri between 1997 and 2010, thinks Italian teams, including Napoli, should stay grounded following positive results in Europe.

Speaking to Rai Sport in an exclusive interview, the 2006 World Cup winning captain shared thoughts on how Italy’s elimination from the World Cup affected him.

“We are Italy, a country that is always well represented at the World Cup and not going there made me feel bad. But we won’t find out the problem now, we will we’ve been carrying around for years without being able to solve it”. (via TuttoNapoli)

Milan, Inter and Napoli all cruised to clean sheet victories in the first leg of their respective Champions League ties, along with Juventus who reached the Europa League last 16 by beating Nantes. However, Cannavaro urged them to stay grounded and not count their chickens before they hatch.

“A positive round doesn’t mean anything, in football there are low rhythms and too many breaks. Of course, we have teams that are doing very well at the moment like Napoli, who can beat anyone today. However, that is not the result of the championship but of the programming that they are carrying on”.

Product of the Napoli youth academy, Cannavaro began his senior career with the Partenopei before going on to etch a legacy few players can boast of despite never winning the Scudetto once in his career.
