The Big Saturday Results
Matt Staples rakes in five figure score
The first brand new major of our recently revamped tournament schedule has crowned its champion, and “Brapan30” is that player. Brapan30 came out on top in the inaugural The Big Saturday after outlasting 159 opponents. They claimed the lion’s share of a guarantee-busting $32,255 prize pool and will forever be known as this event’s first-ever winner.
The Big Saturday Final Table Results
Place | Player | Prize |
---|---|---|
1 | Brapan30 | $6,158 |
2 | AlbertoBalsalm | $4,328 |
3 | Benibennn | $3,027 |
4 | mardaturan | $2,073 |
5 | uffgepasst77 | $1,556 |
6 | antiZZZ | $1,282 |
7 | AAzulay | $1,075 |
8 | billyboyspuff | $915 |
9 | Way2Cold2Fold | $786 |
The $215 buy-in $30,000 guaranteed The Big Saturday shuffled up and dealt at 18:05 GMT on February 4. A shade over eight hours later, the 160-strong field had been whittled down to a single player, Brapan30.
The money bubble burst when “Pillepalle248” busted in 32nd place. Their exit locked in a min-cash of $423.91 for the surviving players. Those survivors crashed one by one until only nine PartyPoker players were in the hunt for the $6,158 top prize. $786.21 was the least any of the finalists would take home, with seven of the final nine padding their bankrolls with four-figure prizes.
“Way2Cold2Fold” found themselves void of chips early into the final table action, resulting in a ninth-place finish. “billyboyspuff” was the next player heading for the exits, their eighth-place finish coming with $915 reasons to be happy with their performance.
With only seven players remaining, each was guaranteed more than $1,000 for their efforts. The final seven became six with the elimination of “AAzulay” ($1,075) and then five when “antiZZZ” ($1,282) crashed by the wayside.
Fourth place and $1,556 went to “uffgepasst77” before “mardaturan” ($2,073) and “Benibennn” ($3,027) saw their tournament’s end prematurely, leaving Brapan30 heads-up against “AlbertoBalsalm.”
The heads-up duo settled the tournament without discussing a deal despite a $1,830 difference in prize money. The lack of an agreement meant Brapan30 got their hands on $6,158 when they emerged from the one-on-one battle unscathed, leaving AlbertoBalsalm to collect the $4,328 runner-up prize.
Matt Staples Narrowly Misses Out in The Grand
The $1,050 Grand on February 5 saw 74 players enter the mix, including two members of Team PartyPoker: Jaime Staples and Matt Staples. Both Staples brothers cashed in The Grand, and one of them almost walked away with top honours.
Thirteen places were paid, and Jaime Staples was the 13th-place finisher. The final table was set after Eder Campana, Tom Hall, and Finland’s Tomi Brouk were relieved of their chips. $1,050 buy-in tournaments attract the best players in the world, but The Grand’s final table was something else and would not have looked out of place in an event featuring a buy-in ten times its size.
Artur Martirosian ($2,890) busted in ninth to leave slightly less shark-infested waters. Gavin Cochrane ($3,184) and Swedish superstar Niklas Astedt ($3,483) joined Martirosian as a spectator soon after his demise.
Then came the exits of Joshua McCully ($4,011) and Jonathon Kay ($4,912). Eliot Hudon, who recently won the WPT World Championship at The Wynn Las Vegas for $4,136,000, finished in The Grand in fourth place for $6,382).
Bulgaria’s Nikolay Dimitrov ($8,684) bowed out in third, leaving Matt Staples heads-up against Czech grinder Michael Sklenicka. The latter held a commanding lead and came out on top when they open-shoved with , and Staples called off his last 13 big blinds with

, busting Staples in second place for $12,344 and awarding Sklenicka the $18,806 top prize.
